PIONEERING EFFORT: ST LUCIA'S BJK CUP DEBUT

08/05/2024

The BJK Cup team departed for Trinidad and Tobago yesterday, August 4th, to participate in the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup competition for the first time. This marks a historic moment for Saint Lucia tennis, as it is the first time our nation is competing in this international tournament.  We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, without whose endorsement participation would have been impossible. The Oliver Gobat Sports Fund, the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, the National Lotteries Authority and the St Lucia Olympic Committee. The team, consisting of Meggan Williams, Jessica Eudovic, and Iyana Paul, is set to compete for an opportunity to be promoted to Group 2 of the competition.

This is the first time Saint Lucia is competing in this international tennis tournament, and we are very proud of the young ladies who answered the call when the invitation was sent out to represent Saint Lucia. They have been training and preparing diligently for this tournament and are experienced in playing events at this level and in the format of the Billie Jean King Cup. This participation will go down in the history books, as these names will be remembered as the first team ever to compete in the BJK Cup for Saint Lucia.

We are very excited about the team's participation in this tournament and look forward to their performance in the upcoming days.

The competition will feature ten formidable teams from the following countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saint Lucia. The teams will be placed into two groups of five, with the top teams per group being promoted next year to the Americas Group 2. Saint Lucia is in Pool B with Costa Rica, Aruba, Bermuda, and El Salvador.

Today, Monday, August 5th, the team will be facing El Salvador in the first round. We will keep you updated with the scores as we receive them.

As our team embarks on this journey, we extend our best wishes for their success and look forward to their outstanding performance in Trinidad and Tobago.
